Marketing Tips

The ultimate goal is to be in the "Top Ten" of the major search engines. Search engines include:

  • Google: web-crawler based
  • Yahoo: web-crawler based
  • Ask Jeeves: web-crawler based
  • AllTheWeb: web-crawler based; powered by Yahoo
  • AOL Search: web-crawler based; powered by Google
  • HotBot: web-crawler based; powered by Ask Jeeves
  • Teoma: web-crawler based; powered by Ask Jeeves
  • AltaVista: powered by Yahoo
  • Gigablast: web-crawler based
  • LookSmart: human compiled directory
  • Lycos: powered by LookSmart (human) and Yahoo (web-crawler)

As you can see, the majority of the search engines are now primarily web-crawler based. In case you are not familiar with the term, a web-crawler (also known as "spider") is a program that visits a page and reads a page. It then follows the trail throughout the site through hyperlinks. Know that the spider does make return visits to check for content updates, so it is a good idea to spend a little time each month updating your site.

The web-crawler program is based on three major factors - the spider, the index the spider formulates (the spider creates its own catalog of information pertaining to your site, it will later match up the catalog with algorithm to determine the relevancy of the site) and the individual search engine software/algorithm. All of this boils down to one thing - your ranking.

So onto some helpful tips - I will post new tips periodically, so be sure and come back. For this week, we'll start off with the basics.

Tip #1: Location is everything. One of the major components in the ranking formula is the location of content and the frequency. The spider considers that it if appears at the top, it must be important - so pay special attention to the placement of your decriptive content.

Tip#2: HTML title tag is critical. It is stated that pages with key words in the HTML title tag are assumed to be more relevant and matched with your initial 2 to 3 sentences at the top of the page will improve your relevancy rankings.

Tip#3: Include hyperlinks throughout your site. Since web-crawlers follow the link trails from one page to another, it is extremely useful to include relevant links throughout the site. This not only assists the spider, but also adds a bit of convenience to your visitors. A site map detailing all of the major assets of your site should also be considered.
